The United Football League is ceasing operations in three markets, discontinuing the Michigan Panthers, Memphis Showboats, and San Antonio Brahmas ahead of the 2026 season. The decision confirms earlier reports, although the Birmingham Stallions, previously rumored to be at risk, will not be affected.
The UFL attributed the move to a new strategic vision focused on smaller venues to enhance the fan experience. “Due to stadium constraints, the available venues in these areas do not align with our new vision of focusing on smaller, more intimate settings,” the league said in a statement. This shift is intended to improve the gameday atmosphere and avoid the perception of sparse attendance in larger stadiums.
As part of this realignment, the league has already announced a new team for Columbus, which will play in the Columbus Crew’s MLS stadium. Other cities being considered for future expansion include Louisville, Orlando, and Boise.
While attendance and television viewership declined from 2024 to 2025, the figures are reportedly considered solid enough to support the league’s future. The restructuring aligns with new investor Mike Repole’s long-term goal of growing the UFL to 16 teams by 2035.
