George Russell has secured pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, narrowly denying Max Verstappen the top spot in a dramatic qualifying session. The Mercedes driver set a new track record at the Marina Bay Street Circuit with a blistering lap of 1m 29.158s.
This marks the seventh pole position of Russell’s Formula 1 career and is the first for the Mercedes team at this venue since Lewis Hamilton started from the front in 2018. Behind them, title rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris will start from third and fifth on the grid, respectively.
Russell will be optimistic heading into the race, having converted his only other pole this season into a victory in Canada. Historical data strongly favors his position, as 10 of the previous 15 Grands Prix in Singapore have been won by the driver starting on pole.
