Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is expected to provide clarity on his future with the team in the coming days, according to sports journalist Elliotte Friedman.
Speaking on the “32 Thoughts” podcast, Friedman reported that McDavid wants to make a decision before the season begins, either by signing a contract extension or explaining his reasons for not doing so.
McDavid, a three-time MVP and five-time Art Ross Trophy winner, has been eligible to sign an extension since July 1 and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Oilers are coming off a recent loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.
While fellow superstar Kirill Kaprizov recently signed a record-breaking eight-year, $136 million extension with the Minnesota Wild, Friedman does not expect McDavid to seek a similar market-setting deal. Instead, he anticipates that if McDavid re-signs, it will be a short-term contract, possibly for less than four years, with an annual salary below $16 million.
The 28-year-old has consistently stated that his primary focus is on winning. Friedman noted that McDavid is “well aware” of the Oilers’ salary cap situation, which includes significant contracts for teammates Leon Draisaitl ($14 million AAV), Evan Bouchard ($10.5 million AAV), and Darnell Nurse ($9.25 million AAV). This financial landscape is believed to be a major factor in his contract discussions.
Ultimately, Friedman believes McDavid, who was drafted first overall in 2015 and has spent his entire career in Edmonton, will sign an extension. He cited McDavid’s loyalty to longtime teammates and the strong relationships he has built with others on the roster as the primary reason he is likely to stay.
