Sony has released a revised PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in Europe that features significantly less storage capacity and a new matte finish, while the price remains unchanged.
The new model’s existence, first reported by reliable insider Billbil-Kun, was confirmed in a recent unboxing video by tech YouTuber Austin Evans. The analysis of a console purchased in Germany reveals the most critical change: a reduction in usable storage from approximately 848 GB in the previous slim model to 667.2 GB. This represents a 27% decrease in space, a considerable downgrade for a digital-only console.
Externally, both the central panel and outer plates now have a matte texture, eliminating the glossy, fingerprint-prone surface of earlier versions. The console is also lighter, weighing 100 grams less than the last slim revision and 1.3 kilograms less than the original 2020 launch model.
Internal examinations show refined, seemingly cheaper components, including a lighter fan and a thinner motherboard. While the console’s performance and power consumption are reportedly unaffected by these engineering changes, the reduced storage makes this a less valuable proposition for consumers.
Despite the apparent cost-saving measures in manufacturing, these savings have not been passed on to customers. The console’s price remains at €499, following several price hikes since its debut. The digital edition, which launched at €399.99, has increased by €100 in Europe. Sony has previously cited a “challenging economic environment” for raising console prices in both Europe and the US.
It is currently unknown if this revised PS5 model with reduced storage will be released in markets outside of Europe.
