Microsoft has resolved a significant outage that blocked users from accessing multiple Microsoft 365 services, including Teams and Exchange Online. The disruption also impacted the admin center and caused widespread authentication failures.
During the outage, users attempting to log in encountered issues with both Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Microsoft Entra single sign-on (SSO). Many received an error message stating, “We are sorry, something went wrong. Please try refreshing the page in a few minutes.” Microsoft acknowledged the problem on its Service Health Dashboard, classifying it as a critical incident due to its noticeable user impact.
The company’s investigation identified the root cause as an imbalanced portion of its directory operations infrastructure, which buckled under a period of high traffic and led to authorization failures.
In response, engineers performed a “near-term mitigation action” by rebalancing traffic across the affected systems. Following a period of monitoring, Microsoft confirmed that this effort was successful and that service had been fully restored.
This incident follows several other high-profile Microsoft service disruptions this year. In January, an MFA outage blocked access to Office apps, and in July, administrators were unable to access the Microsoft 365 admin center. Another outage in August affected users across North America, disrupting access to Office.com and the company’s Copilot AI assistant.
