Australian National Library staff said they were stunned when they found a 120-year-old box of chocolate hidden among the papers of the late Australian poet and journalist Banjo Patterson.
Staff and experts considered that the poet had given them a “precious gift” after he had hidden bars of chocolate among his papers, when he worked as a war correspondent 100 years ago, and that they remained preserved after his death from damage.
The employees were browsing through the papers they had recently obtained for the Australian poet when they found a souvenir box full of chocolate, according to the “upi” website.
As employees unloaded the Patterson papers for digitization, they found the chocolate in a box designed by Britain’s Queen Victoria, to be sent to soldiers in South Africa in 1900 as a gift to the troops.
“There was an interesting smell when it was wrapped,” said Jennifer Todd, restoration officer of the Australian National Library.
“I wish you a happy New Year. Victoria,” read on the chocolate bars.
