Former US Secretary of Defense William Perry called on President-elect Joe Biden to cancel the exclusive control of nuclear weapons launch codes, considering that “the current system in force is against democracy and is extremely dangerous.”
In an article for Politico, Perry warned that the nuclear missile launch codes were still in the hands of outgoing President Donald Trump.
He added, “Trump, who was accused of encouraging violence in Congress last Wednesday, is still placing his finger on the nuclear button.”
Perry continued, “It is time to withdraw the nuclear ball from this president and all the presidents who will succeed him … it is no longer needed and its very existence constitutes a threat to our national security.”
He mentioned that the president was granted from the moment he assumed the presidency the absolute right to launch a nuclear war, and he did not need anyone’s opinion in this regard, asking: “Why this risk? Do we really think that the president should have the ultimate authority to destroy our planet in a moment? “
