The German deputy, Waldemar Gerdt, considered the possibility of abandoning the “Northern Torrent – 2” project to pump Russian gas in conditions of the gradual closure of nuclear power stations in Germany as “suicide.”
He said in an interview with “360” TV: “The rejection of” Northern Torrent – 2 “is just suicide … the energy shortage is huge. The project will not cover Germany’s energy needs. This is total absurdity and complete nonsense.”
He added, “A serious problem for Germany is the refusal of nuclear energy against a background of green hysteria.”
And “Northern Torrent-2”, includes two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
The project is actively opposed by the United States, which is promoting its LNG to the European Union, as well as Ukraine and a number of European countries, which imposed sanctions on the project in December 2019.
Work resumed in December 2020, and according to experts, the project will take several months to complete.
