An American man has managed to discover a rare type of diamond, which changes color according to temperatures, and Stephanie Persaud, of the Gemological Institute of America, called the new diamond “the radiant diamond”, and the unique diamond changes its color from gray to yellow when the weather is very cold. The value of this diamond is still undetermined, but it is expected that the price will be high due to its rarity.
Rare diamonds change their color when exposed to a temperature of minus 196 degrees Celsius, and the color change of the diamond remains a mystery, due to the possibility of more than one mechanism associated with this transformation, in addition to its rarity, which reduces the chances of studying it and conducting extensive experiments on it by scientists, according to the Sky website. For his part, Paul Johnson of the American Gemological Institute said, that diamonds consist of carbon atoms arranged in solid quadrilaterals, or triangular pyramids, and the color appears when there are impurities or structural defects within this chemical composition, indicating that in the case of yellow stones this is Because of the incorporation of nitrogen into its carbon crystal structure.
Johnson added: “The incorporation of nitrogen into the diamond’s carbon crystal structure modifies the light, absorbing the blue portion of the visible spectrum, and when the new type of color-changing stone is cooled, the electric charge moves closer or away from these impurities in the crystal, and thus appears differently when affected by light. The new discovery is scheduled to be presented at a meeting of the Geological Society of America in Oregon next Tuesday.
