The US Department of Justice stated, in a statement, that the two accused appeared for the first time before the Federal District Court of Colombia.
The ministry explained, “After nearly two years of judicial processes, … Moon Chul Myung, 55, has been deported to the United States … He is accused of laundering money through the US financial system as part of a plan to supply luxury goods to the Korean People’s Democratic Republic.” .
The statement stressed that this is the first incident of the extradition of a North Korean citizen to the United States.
Prosecution documents say that from April 2013 until November 2018, Moon Chul Myung plotted a plot with other people with the aim of gaining fraudulent secret access to the US financial system.
The US authorities believe that the man carried out, as part of his money laundering activities, operations of more than 1.5 million dollars, and the man is accused of violating US sanctions against North Korea.
Malaysia expelled Moon Chul Myung on March 19 in a measure that resulted in North Korea severing ties with it.
Malaysia was one of the few allies of North Korea that possesses nuclear weapons, but their relations deteriorated four years ago when the brother of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, Kim Jong Nam, who was a critic of the ruling regime in his country, was killed after he was attacked with a poisonous nerve gas Kuala Lumpur Airport.
South Korea attributed this assassination to North Korea, which Pyongyang denies.
