A South Korean destroyer arrived at an area near the Strait of Hormuz, due to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s incident that an oil tanker sailing under the flag of this country was seized.
The official South Korean Yonhap Agency quoted a government official as saying that the destroyer Choi Yong of the Cheong Hee Military Unit concerned with fighting maritime piracy arrived in the area at dawn on Tuesday to deal with the detention of the tanker “Hankook Kimi”, stressing that the unit had begun to perform its mission.
The agency stated that the destroyer was located the previous day, south of the port of Muscat, and was sent to the vicinity of Hormuz, after being informed of the situation regarding the detention of the tanker.
The agency said that the destroyer is planning to deal with the situation in close cooperation with the Joint Maritime Forces in Bahrain, the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards detained the tanker, claiming it contaminated marine waters, with 20 sailors on board, including five South Koreans and 11 people from Myanmar, Indonesia and two Vietnamese.
