Bicens Bidal, the Spanish left-wing senator, of the “Mess” conglomerate in the islands of Palma de Mallorca, called on Madrid to prevent Algerian “interference” in Spanish waters and protect the territorial waters of the island of Cabrera.
Pesens’s call came on the occasion of the presentation of the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs Arancha Gonzalez Laya of her government’s diplomatic program (2021-2024) before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday.
The local newspaper, “Diario de Mallorca”, said that Bisense called on the minister “to defend the territorial waters of the national enclosure of” Cabrera “against the intervention of Algeria” in a press release issued by the “MES” bloc.
It should be noted that Algeria and Spain are working to overcome the dispute raised by the demarcation of the maritime borders between the two countries, which led to a tense relationship between them a year ago, following media clamor and political controversy in Spain, under which Algeria was accused of “invading” the island of Cabrera and working to annex it to its sovereignty within the framework of its exclusive economic zone. This was denied by the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sabri Boukadoum, at the time. The political media controversy in Spain followed the visit of the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs to Algeria, during which it was agreed to overcome the dispute by negotiation, as required by international law when the maritime borders between countries overlap.
