Villarreal was eliminated from the round of 32 of the Spanish Football Cup on Monday, losing to Unionistas de Salamanca from the third division on penalty kicks 6-7 after they tied 1-1 in regular and extra time.
The match was continued after it was stopped on Sunday at the beginning of extra time due to a power outage, causing complete darkness to fall on the stadium, when the result indicated a 1-1 draw between the two teams.
The Spanish Football Federation said in a statement that the match was postponed “due to a problem that occurred related to the lighting of the Reina Sofia stadium.”
Villarreal, which occupies 13th place in La Liga, took the lead through the young man of Moroccan origin, Elias Akhomache, in the 82nd minute, before De Salamanca equalized from a penalty kick successfully scored by substitute Alfred Balanas (87th) in front of about 6,000 spectators to force an extension.
