From this Thursday until next Sunday, in the context of International Women’s Day, the cinema is programmed by them, to show the stories of struggle and dignity that women have brought to the big screen.
Through the FilminLatino platform and with 163 screenings in 43 theaters in 16 states, the second edition of the Ellas programan cycle is now being presented, a selection of nine films made by women and selected for this cycle by four young programmers: Jessica Rito, the collective Cineclub Cinito Sáfico, in Nueva León; Diana Armenta, co-director of the traveling project Faz a Faz, in Tabasco; Anahí Estudillo, co-founder of Nayar LabCinema, in Nayarit, and Yazmín Martín, director of Cine Móvil Pantera, in Hidalgo.
Among the films selected by them is the work “My friend Betty” (2012), by the director Diana Garay Viñas, a film that tries to understand the circumstances for which a woman was sentenced to thirty years in prison, accused of the murder of his mother; there is also “The revolution of the alcatraces” (2012), where Luciana Kaplan documents the struggle of Eufrosina Cruz Mendoza, who was denied the municipal presidency of her community in the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca for the simple fact of being a woman and how That was the starting point for questioning the uses and customs of her community in the face of the obvious gender inequalities.
Likewise, the programmers of the edition have chosen stories of female struggles from our vast cinema such as “Negra” (2020), where director Medhin Tewolde films her personal exploration and encounter with other Afro-descendant women, who narrate what it means for each one of them. live in Mexico from their skin color.
There is also the film “La revuelta” (2022), by Lucero González, the story of the feminist collective La Revuelta, which was active between 1975 and 1983 and which founded the first feminist newspaper in Mexico, of the same name. Almost fifty years after the formation of the group, the director visits her former colleagues to recover her memories of her struggle.
The rest of the tapes on the schedule are: “Dear Nancy” (2021), by Olivia Peregrino; “Flowers of the plain” (2021), by Mariana Xochiquétzal Rivera; “Tamara and the Ladybug” (2016), by Lucía Carreras; “Los adioses” (2017), by Natalia Beristáin, and “Flor en otomí” (2012), by Luisa Riley.
In a complementary way, the Ellas programan cycle will premiere the film “Now that we are together” (2022), where the director Patricia Balderas collects her own story, that of the women who accompany her and that of her mother to demonstrate that, in a world hostile, self-defense and sisterhood are revolutionary acts.
Vindictas, rescue of female letters
In the world of letters there is also a fair emphasis on the creation of women, especially for the rescue of those authors who, for various reasons, generally related to the male canon, their texts were not edited, published or did not have the right visibility.
Hence the focused work that the General Directorate of Publications and Editorial Development, of Culture UNAM, has put into the Vindictas project, through which this Friday, March 10, they will carry out the “Jornada Vindictas. The women who forged our present”, with a series of tables at the Casa Universitaria del Libro (Casul) to highlight the achievements from publishing, research and promotion that have resulted in said editorial collection of rescue and focused literary memory in female production in essays, poetry, novels, among others, in Latin America.
The tables to be held during the day are: “Vindictas: a collective effort”, with the participation of Sandra Lorenzano and Socorro Venegas, moderated by Ave Barrera; “Vindictas: the urgency of reading them”, with Alejandra Amatto and Anamari Gomís, moderated by Guadalupe Alonso, and finally, “Cultural Agents”, to discuss the work of editors, cultural promoters, writers, academics, plastic artists, among others, that opens equitable spaces where women can be heard and promotes the fight to guarantee access to the next generations. Imelda Martorell, Ana Garduño and Graciela de la Torre will take part in the latter, moderated by Alejandro Suárez Plancarte.
In a complementary way, this Friday, at the Casul headquarters (Orizaba 24, Roma Norte), the exhibition “Vindictas Latin America: Miradas a la Raíz” is inaugurated, made up of the work of four visual artists from the region: Isol (Argentina) , Paloma Valdivia (Chile), Sara Morante (Spain) and Rosario Lucas (Mexico).
