It was reported that a 25-year-old woman bled tears from both eyes during her menstrual period, in a rare condition known as “hemolacria”, and it may have different causes.
And normal menstruation can sometimes lead to periodic bleeding outside the uterus, known as surrogacy. It is possible that the woman’s scarlet tears represent an extremely unusual convergence of two conditions – menstruation alternating and bloody tears – resulting in tears of blood caused by menstruation, according to the case report.
Although the woman’s scarlet tears seemed alarming, the doctors found that her eyes were not damaged and that the blood tears were not accompanied by a headache, dizziness, or other symptoms of a health problem. Writing in the BMJ Case, the researchers also wrote that there were no signs of anomalies in the sinuses, tear ducts, or the tears themselves.
Common causes of haemorrhage include: inflammation, trauma, lesions, tumors, high blood pressure, and diseases such as jaundice, anemia and vascular disorders, according to a report published February 14 by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. But after ruling out these possible causes of a woman’s tears, doctors identified the source as an alternate menstruation, which can cause bleeding from the nose, ears, lungs, nipples, intestines, and “even the skin,” as well as from the eyes, according to doctors.

In fact, the woman said she had suffered a nosebleed the first time she cried blood.
Certain types of eye tissue are known to be affected by hormonal changes. For example, the curve and thickness of the cornea “can vary during different stages of the menstrual period, pregnancy and lactation,” which may explain why a woman’s menstruation causes bleeding from her eyes, according to the report.
Doctors treated her with oral contraceptives, and after three months of hormonal therapy, the woman did not experience any additional bleeding. “This is a rare and unusual clinical case,” the doctors wrote, adding that there is nothing like it has been described in any recent scientific literature.
The researchers concluded that, however, more research will be needed in order to understand exactly the cause of women’s blood tears, and to determine how to effectively manage such a condition in the long term.
