A Zara union calls a strike during Black Friday in A Coruña, Spain

A union representing workers at the fashion retailer Zara has called a two-day strike next week over wage issues at the 44 stores in the company’s hometown, A Coruñain northern Spain, a union leader said on Thursday.

The strike, called by the CIG regional union, will take place during the sales of the “Black Friday” on November 24 and 25, said the CIG union leader and sales assistant at ZaraCarmiña Naveiro.

CIG represents the majority of the 1,000 dependents who work for Zara in A Coruña.

In recent months wage disputes have increased throughout Europe in the face of galloping inflation.

The decision to go to strike was taken after a meeting between Zara owner Inditex and representatives of at least three unions on Thursday.

The company had increased salary offer initial during the negotiations, but it was considered insufficient by the CIG, Naveiro said after the meeting.

“We want a salary similar to that of the Inditex workers in the factories and logistics centers that are very close to here.”

Workers in logistics centers earn about 2,000 euros a month.

Inditex proposed a 10% increase for next year plus smaller annual increases until 2025, which in total would mean an extra 200 euros ($207) in store workers’ monthly wages by then, according to the union.

CIG, which is also planning protests near Inditex’s world headquarters in Arteixo, a few kilometers from A Coruña, wants an increase of 500 euros a month by 2025.

Some of the other unions were in favor of continuing talks to reach an agreement with the company.

“The workers want us to reach an agreement and we will value this new offer, which seems better,” said Lucía Trenor, of the CCOO national union.

Inditexwho opened his first store Zara in A Coruña in 1975, he declined to comment on the wage dispute.

The salaries of Zara’s dependents range between 1,058 euros and 1,400 euros per month in A Coruña, said the union leader.

Inditex employs 165,000 people in 177 countries. Around 86% of them work in the 6,477 company stores and at least seven out of 10 workers are women, according to the latest Inditex financial reports on its website.
