Abortion, third cause of maternal death in Mexico

According to data from the federal Ministry of Health (SSA), abortion is the third cause of maternal death in Mexico with a total of 38 deaths so far this year, which corresponds to a percentage of 7.4.

For this reason, the federal agency presented a public policy to provide safe abortion.

The SSA reported that, through the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health, the Technical Guidelines for Safe Abortion Care in Mexico were made available to the public.

This document establishes the basic care criteria that SSA health units must have so that women with childbearing potential, including minors, have access to safe abortion services within the country.

The health sector seeks that the guidelines issued guide the health services so that they offer good practices with greater scientific efficiency and that this guarantees, to those who request it, safety and well-being when undergoing said procedure.

For his part, the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez, reported that the main objective is that every woman who requires an abortion in the Mexican Republic has timely, decisive and comprehensive care; in addition, that there is a service with a gender and human rights perspective.

Also, López-Gatell assured that currently in Mexico it is necessary to turn the guidelines into a reality by disseminating them, so that the population is aware of the solid and viable alternatives to perform a safe abortion in the country.

According to the Technical Guidelines for Safe Abortion Care in Mexico, in the country, the interruption of pregnancy, as reproductive autonomy, is legal in only nine states. These entities are: Baja California, Baja California Sur, Mexico City, Colima, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Sinaloa, Oaxaca and Veracruz.

For its part, due to imprudent causes, legal abortion is allowed in 29 states of the Republic. Only Nuevo León, Chiapas and Tabasco do not allow it.
