Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, expressed his support for the initiative announced by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today for a solution in Yemen.
Aboul Gheit considered that “the initiative represents a positive step towards a comprehensive settlement in Yemen, and it reflects the sincerity of the Kingdom’s intentions and its endeavor to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people as a result of the continuing war.”
“The main points of the initiative represent a starting point for a comprehensive political dialogue, and it represents a balanced treatment of the concerns of the various parties, including the Houthi side,” he added.
An official source in the General Secretariat quoted Aboul Gheit as saying that “the opening of Sanaa airport has always been a Houthi demand, and that the initiative’s handling of this demand confirms its balance.”
He pointed out that “the ball is now in the court of the Houthi group, and that they are facing a real test of their commitment to the interests of the Yemeni people.”
He called on the group to “set aside any private interests or external agendas, and to look at the opportunity involved in the initiative to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people and initiate a comprehensive political dialogue that ends the crisis.”
