Abridged fashion guide: silhouettes and concepts

This is the third and last part of a journey through the world of fashion.

In the first guide, I wrote about terms in the catwalk world, the second part was about the types of fabrics that Haute Couture and fast fashion garments are made from. This third part will help you to correctly name each piece of clothing you wear, your pants that go to the waist in the correct way, as well as to differentiate a jacket from a jacket.

To write part number three of this fashion glossary, I relied on the Fundéu RAE publications —an initiative of the Spanish news agency EFE and the Royal Spanish Academy.

Let it serve as an introduction to the world of the correct name of the garments so that you call each clothes you wear by its name.

Let’s start with the clothes:

Anorak: Waterproof outerwear, with hood, zipper, and cuffs or elastic bands on the sleeves.

Babydoll: It is applied to the mini dress with a cut below the bust that falls with flight. It also refers to the style that is based on the aesthetics of children’s fashion and dolls: it uses lace, embroidery, ruffles, tucks, bows and ruffles.

Babucha: Traditionally Arab footwear, characterized by being flat with an opening in the heel and a pointed finish.

Ballet dancer: Simple flat women’s footwear with a round cut, also known as “flat”.

Blazer: It is the Anglo-Saxon term that receives a jacket that reaches the hip, without cut at the waist and with buttons.

Balcony: Applies to a type of very low-cut bra, which almost only covers the lower part of the chest. This is also the name given to the dress that is shaped like a bra on the outside with very visible straps.

Bandana: Triangular cut cotton scarf that is used to put it around the neck or on the head as decoration or protection.

A band: Strapless band worn as a bikini top bra.

Biker: Normally black leather jacket, with flaps, pockets, and side zipper.

Biker short: Shorts made of sports fabric or lycra.

Bolero: Short women’s jacket, both with long and short sleeves or with sleeves that fit close to the body and reach above the waist.

Borsalino: Hat generally made of felt that has a knotted ribbon on the left side at the base.

Boyfriend: Said of a pair of pants: women’s, generally cowboy, which has a masculine cut.

Cardigan: Point’s jacket.

Huntress: Synonymous with casual jacket, they are usually made of leather, denim or sports.

Chino: Men’s cut trousers made of soft fabric.

Chal: Garment to cover the body much longer than wide so that it crosses the chest.

morning coat: Suit with jacket open in two skirts at the upper back, from the waist down. It is considered the maximum etiquette day outfit for men.

Chesterfield: Said of a coat: the fitted one with a velvet collar and concealed closure that reaches below the knee and is part of the men’s wardrobe.

Choker: Short necklace that hugs the middle part of the neck.

Clutch: Handbag or handbag to go out at night or use in strict etiquette.

Corset: Feminine garment that hugs the body from the chest to the hips by means of a structure that is strongly tied at the back.

Stole: Long leather band that is put on the shoulders.

Skirt: Garment that hangs from the waist to the legs, ends in different sizes.

Flip Flop o chanclas: Light footwear consisting of a rubber sole.

Scarf: Wide and long scarf for the neck.

Jeans: Hard cloth pants.

Jogger: Loose-fit sports pants with a long, wide waist.

Jumpsuit: One-piece garment consisting of pants and shirt.

Leggings or tights: Tight-fitting pants that cover from the waist to the heels.

Peplum: It is applied to the dress or blouse with the fitted body and skirt and one or more ruffles at the waist.

Fisherman pants: Jeans or other material that reaches above the ankle.

sneakers or tennis: Sport shoe.

T-Shirt: T-shirt or T-shirt.

Stiletto: Shoe with a heel of 10 or more centimeters also known as a stiletto heel.

Lingerie Dress: Dress with transparencies and lace.

Strapless: Garments that have a strapless neckline.

clogs: Shoe with wooden sole.
