Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh, announced his intention to file a “series of legal cases” against the Bloomberg International Economic News, after a report by the agency spoke of the United States’ intention to impose possible sanctions on it.
The National News Agency quoted a statement from the Media Office of the Banque du Liban, on Friday, that Salameh “will file a series of legal cases inside and outside Lebanon against the American Bloomberg Agency and its correspondence in Beirut and everyone who stands behind them.”
The statement said that the governor of the Banque du Liban would sue the agency for alleged “crimes of fabricating news, insulting, and attempts to discredit the governor of the Central Bank.”
Salameh considered that “the persistence of these abuses necessitates action by all those who claim concern for the Central Bank and Lebanon’s financial reputation, which negatively affects all Lebanese, which makes these crimes amount to national treason and harm the country’s financial security and the chances of re-rescue,” he said .
Earlier Friday, the media spokeswoman of the US Embassy in Lebanon, Casey Bonfield, said in statements to the Lebanese Al-Jadid channel that the reports on imposing sanctions on the governor of the Banque du Liban were “incorrect.”
Bloomberg News quoted sources as saying that the administration of US President Joe Biden intends to impose sanctions on Riad Salameh in cooperation with European countries, including freezing sources of his funds outside Lebanon, against the background of investigations into financial transfers.
Riad Salameh has been heading the Banque du Liban for 28 years.
This comes at a time when investigations are underway in Switzerland about money transfers and the Bank of Lebanon.
