Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman praised football’s ability to excite after his team turned two goals behind to a 5-3 victory over Granada, after extra time, to reach the semi-finals of the Spanish Cup, on Wednesday.
Barcelona shot three times into the goal in normal time, and Granada goalkeeper, Aaron Escandel, saved several chances, but the Catalan team trailed 0-2 and was about to exit the Spanish Cup, before Antoine Griezmann scored a goal in the 88th minute, then Jordi realized Alba tie into injury time.
Griezmann, Frenkie de Jong and Alba added three goals in extra time, while Fede Fico scored for Granada from the penalty spot.
After this “Remontada”, Coman said to his team: “It’s amazing. Football is amazing. The first thing I want to commend for tonight is the mental strength of my team, so he never stopped trying to win.”
The Dutch coach added: “Football wronged us in the first half, as we started the match hard, but we made a mistake by relying on aesthetic performance inside my team’s penalty area, where you cannot do that, and this cost us the first goal.”
He continued: “We knew that we were unlucky. We had several opportunities, but the ball did not enter the goal, whether it was rescued by the goalkeeper or collided in the frame of the goal, but the victory was deserved in the end because of our approach.”
Lack of respect
Coman accused his French rival, Paris Saint-Germain, of putting pressure on his team before their confrontation in the Champions League, by talking about the possibility of joining the “Barca” star, Lionel Messi, to the French champion.
The duo of Saint-Germain, Angel Di Maria and Neymar, had previously expressed their desire to join Messi to the French capital’s team.
And last month, the sporting director of Saint-Germain, Leonardo, spoke of the French champion as one of the teams that would welcome Messi.
“I think that many people in Paris Saint-Germain talk about Messi, who is a Barcelona player, is disrespectful,” Koeman said.
Barcelona will host its French opponent in the first leg of the European Champions League round of 16 on February 16, before heading out to face it in the second leg on the tenth of March.
