According to the sources, Yoon Sung-yu filed a lawsuit Monday with the Suwon District Court, south of Seoul, demanding more than 2.5 billion won ($ 2.25 million) in compensation for his 20-year prison term, after he was wrongly convicted of killing a 13-year-old girl in 1989.
A local court sentenced Yoon Sung Yu, who was 22 at the time, to life in prison and found him guilty of rape and murder of a minor girl.
The man defended himself and claimed that the police had forced him to confess to the crime he had not committed, but the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court upheld the ruling of the first instance court, and accordingly, Yoon was placed behind bars for 20 years until he was granted parole in 2009.
In November last year, Yoon filed for a retrial in the case after the police announced a month earlier that one of their citizens named Li Chunjie, who was imprisoned for another murder, had confessed to committing murders including the one in which Yun was accused.
The court offered Liu an apology on behalf of the judiciary, saying that the previous incorrect ruling was issued based on wrongful behavior by the investigation agencies.
Yoon spent a total of 7,326 days behind bars from the day he was arrested until the day he was released on August 14, 2009.
Under the Criminal Compensation Law, Leon is entitled to claim financial compensation estimated at five times the minimum wage for every day he spends in prison.
According to the minimum wage last year, Yoon could receive a maximum of 343,600 won (307 US dollars) in compensation for every day he spent in prison, meaning about 2.5 billion won for his time behind bars.
Yoon says he will file a separate complaint against the government and demand financial compensation for the unlawful arrest and severe abuse by the interrogators, and the psychological suffering he and his family endured.
