The Sri Lankan authorities announced the end of the investigation into the series of bloody bombings that rocked the country during Easter 2019 and confirmed that measures are being taken to punish all those involved in these attacks.
The President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, said today, Thursday, in his speech on the occasion of the country’s 73rd independence anniversary, that he had received the final report from the committee charged with investigating the attacks that killed 267 people on April 21, 2019, stressing that none of those responsible for the bloody attacks would be allowed to flee. Rajapaksa did not disclose the details of the report, confirming that he had issued directives to implement the recommendations that came in this document.
He said, “We will not allow those responsible for planning and enabling this tragedy to escape punishment, and we will not allow extremism to raise its head again in this country.”
This statement comes against the backdrop of a protest march organized by the Tamil political and religious leaders in the country, with the participation of Muslim leaders, in which they demanded the authorities to achieve justice for those who were killed and disappeared during the civil war, and to release prisoners detained without trial on charges of terrorism.
