Agreement on Civil Nuclear Cooperation between Mexico and the United States enters into force

The Government of the United States announced that the first agreement in history for Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy between Mexico and the United States entered into force.

The State Department explained that the agreement, which allows the transfer of nuclear equipment between countries, will strengthen collaboration in the area of ​​energy security and will help strengthen diplomatic and economic relations.

“This is the first bilateral agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation between the United States and Mexico. The Agreement builds on nearly 80 years of peaceful cooperation in nuclear matters between our two countries and establishes the conditions for the continuation of civil nuclear trade between the United States and Mexico,” according to the statement issued by the Department of State.

Civil nuclear cooperation agreements, also known as 123 agreements, provide a regulatory framework for exports of nuclear materials, equipment, and components from the United States to another country.

“This agreement offers a complete framework for peaceful nuclear cooperation with Mexico based on a reciprocal commitment to nuclear non-proliferation. It will enable the transfer of nuclear material, equipment (including reactors), components and information for the purposes of nuclear research and nuclear energy production”, added the department led by Antony Blinken.
