Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad considered that Iranian-Saudi cooperation would change the situation in the region, and would constitute a golden opportunity for peace, reconstruction and development for all countries of the region.
In an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper, Al-Qabas, Ahmadinejad said: “Iran and Saudi Arabia are large, important and influential countries in the region and international circles, and there were no significant differences in their historical relations.”
He added: “Friendship, cooperation, coordination and conformity are demands that the countries and peoples aspire to, and all of this will change the situation in the region, create a kind of unity among its peoples, and create golden opportunities for peace, reconstruction and development for all countries in the region.”
In response to a question about the efforts that he expects from Kuwait to resolve differences between Iran and some Arab countries, Ahmadinejad said: “Good efforts must be in the service of unity and brotherhood among all peoples, and it is expected from all officials of countries, especially the distinguished Emir of Kuwait (Sheikh Nawwaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber). Al-Sabah), who enjoys good relations with neighboring countries, should strive in this context more than before.
Regarding the protests in Iran, Ahmadinejad considered that “any harassment, or any use of violence against the people, opposes the core of the revolution and the explicit text of the constitution of the Islamic Republic (Iran), and leads to a widening of the gap between officials and the people, and thus the system will be the one affected.”
He added, “It is the right of peoples to criticize those responsible and express their demands.”
Regarding the candidacy for the upcoming Iranian presidential elections, Ahmadinejad said: “The elections are not our main concern today. We have more important issues in the country, the region and the world, and our humanitarian duty requires us to take care of them first. If necessary, I will raise some issues about the elections at the appropriate time.”
