Airlines cancel more than 4,000 flights in the United States due to the winter storm

Airlines canceled Friday more than 4,400 flights in the United States due to a severe winter storm that hampered airport operations in several regions and frustrated thousands of holiday travelers.

The measures add to the almost 2,700 flights canceled on Thursday, according to the FlightAware flight tracking website. The Amtrak passenger railway has canceled dozens of trains until Christmas, interrupting the trips of thousands of people.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed ground stops or de-icing delays at several US airports because of the weather.

According to the FAA, “bad winter weather moving northeast across the Great Lakes will have a major impact” on flights. It added that “flight delays are likely from Boston to airports in the DC metropolitan area, Seattle-Tacoma International Airports, and Portland and Aspen” in Colorado.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told CNN the US aviation system “is operating under enormous pressure” and two different storms and strong winds are affecting airports across the country. About 10% of US flights were canceled Thursday, according to Buttigieg.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport had canceled 44% of its departing flights as of 14:00 GMT. Earlier on Friday, the FAA issued a grounding decision there due to snow and ice.

More than 40% of the departing flights in Detroit Metro were cancelled, 60% in Portland, 34% in New York’s LaGuardia, 27% in Boston and 21% in Chicago O’Hare, which indicated that wind gusts are expected from 40 to 50 miles per hour in Chicago on Friday.

Another 5,500 flights suffered delays on Friday, including more than a fifth of those operated by American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines. Southwest canceled 889 flights Friday, more than a fifth of all its scheduled activity, while Alaska Airlines canceled 359, or 46%, of its flights.
