Daily suffering
Ibrahim, one of the displaced people at Khawla Bint Al-Azwar Joint Primary School, told Al Jazeera Net that he and his family were forced to stay in the school despite the difficulty of daily life as a result of overcrowding and severe overcrowding, to escape the Israeli bombing on various areas of the Gaza Strip, including the neighborhood in which he was residing.
He added that the women and children reside inside the classrooms, while the men are distributed in all other available places, such as the school yard and the back spaces of the classrooms. Most of them set up tents or place bags and cloth over them to reduce the sun’s radiance on them during the day and protect them from the cold at night, as well as during rainfall.
Ibrahim points out that UNRWA employees – who are mostly teachers – supervise organizing school accommodation and distributing the aid that arrives, with the help of some of the displaced, including potable water, of which there is a severe shortage, as charitable institutions and UNRWA fill some of the barrels designated for drinking, but they are It quickly runs out due to the large number of displaced people.
The young Palestinian man reflects the extent of the food shortage by saying that UNRWA distributes very limited quantities of food to the displaced, one loaf of bread per day for each person, with some canned goods, where every 3 people share one small box of meat, for example.
This forces heads of families and young people to go out during the day to search for bread outside school to meet the needs of their families, and they queue for very long hours, perhaps up to 10 hours, to get some loaves of bread, as bakeries do not allow purchasing more than a specific number for each person, and many of them return without Being unable to purchase due to bakeries running out of quantities.
Ibrahim points out that the sanitary situation in schools is very bad, as the bathrooms are extremely crowded, because their limited number does not fit the thousands who reside in the school, and the bathroom crisis is compounded by the continuous water shortages.
He explains that although many displaced people come to schools after losing their families and children, they exchange condolences and try to alleviate the pain of losing loved ones and the difficult life of displacement at the same time.
