New figures from the Department of Agriculture reveal that at least six greyhounds were injured at Newbridge Greyhound Stadium in the first eight months of 2024, with three of the dogs subsequently euthanised.
The data, covering the period from January 1 to August 31, shows that injuries at the Kildare venue included severe fractures and limb breaks sustained during both official races and private trial events.
On April 25, a greyhound was euthanised by a track veterinarian after suffering a compound fracture of its right humerus. Another was euthanised following a fractured hock on August 29. Additional injuries were recorded during trials in February, March, April, and May, two of which also resulted in euthanasia by the owners’ veterinarians.
These incidents are part of a wider national trend. Across all Greyhound Racing Ireland (GRI) licensed tracks, 242 greyhounds were injured during the same eight-month period, and 138 either died on the track or were euthanised due to their injuries.
