World number two Jannik Sinner secured his place in the semi-finals of the China Open with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in Beijing on Monday.
The Italian dominated the opening set, clinching it in just 26 minutes. He faced a tougher challenge in the second, overcoming a fall in the eighth game and a 4-5 deficit. Sinner broke back immediately to level the score before securing another break in the 12th game to seal the win. The victory marks Sinner’s 40th tour-level win of the season and his seventh semi-final appearance in his last eight tournaments.
“I feel like I started off very well in the first set,” Sinner said. “When he was serving for the set he made a couple of unforced errors which helped me to come back and win in two.”
Sinner will next face third seed Alex de Minaur. The Australian advanced after his opponent, 20-year-old Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic, was forced to retire with a left-leg injury while trailing 4-1 in the first set.
In other quarter-final action, American teenager Learner Tien reached his first ATP Tour semi-final after fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy retired due to a thigh injury. Tien was leading 4-6, 6-3, 3-0 at the time of the stoppage.
Meanwhile, eighth seed Daniil Medvedev continued his dominance over second seed Alexander Zverev with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory. The win extends the Russian’s head-to-head record against the German to 14-6, including victories in eight of their last ten encounters.
