The Algerian prosecution has demanded a 5-year prison sentence for blogger Walid Kachida, who is considered a supporter of the anti-authority protest movement, on charges of mocking President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and religion.
The trial of Walid Kachida (25 years old) began in Setif, north-eastern Algeria, and the prosecution demanded a five-year prison sentence for him “for insulting a statutory body, insulting the president of the republic and insulting the known from religion,” according to the National Committee for the Release of Detainees, which sought a fine of 500 thousand Algerian dinars against the accused, while the verdict is expected to be issued on January 4, 2021.
The activist has been in pretrial detention for 8 months for publishing comic pictures on the Facebook page of the “Hirak Mims” group that he runs, which are deemed to be harmful to the authorities and religion.
