Amazon.com Inc is working on an independent application to watch sports contentreported The Information on Wednesday, citing a source with direct knowledge of the plan.
Sports remain one of the biggest draws to watch live as American audiences increasingly switch from pay TV to subscriptions to streaming apps.
The move will likely complement Amazon’s effort to double down on sports programming on its Prime Video service, a key channel for attracting consumers to its shopping platform.
Amazon already owns the rights to broadcast matches such as the National Football League (NFL)’s Thursday Night Football franchise and Premier League soccer matches in the UK, allowing it to better compete with sports broadcasting leader Walt Disney Co.
Last week, Alphabet Inc’s YouTube unit also signed a multi-year deal to exclusively broadcast the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package of games in the United States.
It was unclear when Amazon would launch the sports app and if it would go ahead with the plan, according to the report.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The company has been reviewing unprofitable business units and laying off some staff to cover rising costs and falling demand as inflation-worried consumers and businesses spend less.
