MICHOACÁN, Mexico — A couple from California was identified as the shooting victims that were found in a Ford pickup truck in Mexico, according to Mexican authorities.
Gloria Ambriz, 50, and Rafael Cardona, 53, were on vacation when they were shot in Michoacán, Mexico on Wednesday, the Michoacán Attorney General’s Office said.
Ambriz was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cardona died while being treated at a hospital, the attorney general’s office added.
They noted that the victims were relatives of the mayor of Angamacutiro, Hermes Pacheco. Cardona was the brother of the mayor’s wife, the office said.
The deadly shooting happened in the municipality of Angamacutiro, located in the northern part of the state.
The couple reportedly owned a house in Angamacutiro, which was near where authorities said the shooting happened. Authorities said forensic experts found “ballistic evidence” at the scene that will be analyzed.
The investigation into the double-homicide is ongoing.
