Matheson, 73, wrote on his Twitter page about Jill Biden, the wife of the current US President Joe Biden, saying, “It is wonderful to have a first lady of sophistication and heart. She can speak English!” . In a hint, as some have considered, to former First Lady Melania Trump’s poor familiarity with English accent.
As a result, a “Twitter” user accused the Hollywood star of “having little taste”. Another user wrote: “Mocking immigrants is not out of taste, especially since the immigrant has made her first task is to integrate by learning the English language and deepening into American culture.”
In response to the violent attack on him and the criticism sparked by his tweet, Matheson deleted his post, then issued an apology, writing on Saturday: “This morning I made a hasty and stupid joke about the former first lady.”
He added, “It was not funny, it was bad taste. It was unfortunate and without a sense of humor, and I apologize.”
This morning I made a hasty and stupid joke about the former First Lady. It wasn’t funny, and it was in poor taste. It was regretful and humorless and I apologize.

And last year, singer and actress Bette Midler apologized, after sparking a firestorm by mocking then-First Lady Melania’s accent. As with Matheson, Middler was immediately described as “racist” and “xenophobic.”
Even fierce critics of Donald Trump said Melania’s rhetoric was not a “legitimate reason” to criticize her.
