
American writer and novelist Noah Gordon, known for his works on the history of medicine and Judaism, died Monday, November 22, at the age of 95, his family announced.
Mr. Gordon had just celebrated « son 95e birthday with all the pleasure it owed to a long fruitful life ”, wrote his relatives in a statement released on social networks. “Noah’s life and work have touched the lives of millions of readers around the world, his work will survive him”, they add.
Success in 1986 with “The Physician”
Born November 11, 1926 in Massachusetts (northeastern United States), Noah Gordon served in the US Army at the end of World War II, before abandoning his medical studies for journalism.
He then works for the Boston Herald in the 1950s, became editor-in-chief of the magazine Science, before becoming a freelance journalist and novelist.
His first novel, The Rabbi, published in 1965, is based on his experience as an American Jew. He will write a last one on Judaism in 2000, The Last Jew (The Last Jew, in French).
He met success in 1986 with The Physician (The Doctor of Isfahan), first volume of a trilogy recounting life in the XIe century of Robert Jeremy Cole, from his childhood in England to his medical studies in Isfahan, Persia, alongside master Avicenna. Noah Gordon’s latest novel, The Winemaker (2012, not translated), takes place in Catalonia in the XIXe century.
