Fauci said delaying a second dose to vaccinate more Americans carries risks.
And he warned that switching to a single-dose strategy may limit the extent of citizens’ protection from the virus, enable the spread of its new strains that are more capable of infection, and may increase Americans, who are already hesitant of taking the vaccine.
“We tell people that the two doses are what you should take … and then we say ‘Excuse me, we changed our mind,'” Fauci said in a report published by the Washington Post late Monday.
On Sunday, Fauci said he was encouraging Americans to accept any of the three available vaccines, including Johnson & Johnson, which received approval recently.
The US government approved the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine on Saturday, to be the third vaccine available in the United States after Pfizer / Biontech and Moderna dual-dose.
