AMLO declines to give a message about energy during the national holidays

After asserting that on September 16, within the framework of the military parade to commemorate Mexican independence, he would speak out for the national energy sector, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador yesterday ruled out continuing with that objective.

“I am not going to refer to that issue on the 16th, I am going to talk about peace in the world and I am going to talk about Mexico’s position on the war in Russia and Ukraine, and I am going to present a proposal to the United Nations to achieve the peace,” the president said at his morning press conference.

Last July, the Mexican president assured that it would be the day of the military parade when he would make public his statement on the request for consultations, from the United States and Canada, on Mexico’s energy policy within the framework of the Free Trade Agreement between the three countries.

Yesterday, the federal Executive explained that his change of opinion had to do with a letter that his counterpart, Joe Biden, recently sent him.

“It has to do with the response (…) There is a different tone, an attitude of respect; rather, it is the reaffirmation of respect for our sovereignty, because President Biden had always raised it, that the treatment with us, the relationship, was going to take place on an equal footing, respecting our sovereignty.

“And what happened with the consultation, the tone, the mode, President Cárdenas would say, because he was not the most diplomatic or what we deserve,” he deepened.

López Obrador concluded that efforts must be made to maintain cordial relations. “We also appreciate the respectful attitude of President Biden and for that reason, there is no point in continuing to encourage differences.”
