This week the 52nd General Assembly of the OAS is being held in Peru, addressing issues such as discrimination, inclusive development, health, food security and others. The three-day event makes it clear that the Organization of American States is no longer the same as it was five years ago. Democracy and human rights are not his main priority, but rather the ideological restructuring of the OAS, with new players on the court, who promote a turn of the wheel to the left, more accommodating of the dictators of Cuba and Venezuela.
In this line of changes, the Mexican delegation has joined the efforts of Antigua and Barbuda, presenting a resolution called: “Revocation of the acceptance of a permanent representative before the OAS appointed by the National Assembly of Venezuela in January 2019” . The document seeks to silence the voice of the Venezuelan opposition in the OAS, considering it illegitimate, giving implicit recognition to Nicolás Maduro and paving the way for an eventual return of the banana dictator. The proposal argues that the resolution “The situation in Venezuela and the crisis of Venezuelan migrants”, with which a representative of Juan Guaidó was accepted before the OAS in January 2019, does not agree with the provisions of the Charter of said Organization. The saddest thing is that this resolution could be approved in “the new OAS.”
I want to make it clear that the initiative is not a mere blow against Guaidó, but against the Venezuelan people. Let us just remember that, a few days ago, the UN Independent International Mission confirmed the serious crimes and human rights violations perpetrated by the Maduro regime, including torture, rape and a whole catalog of crimes against humanity.
On the other hand, the 52nd General Assembly of the OAS will not say a single word about the new wave of repressive acts taking place these days in Cuba. On the island, women and children are arrested alike in the face of the repressive hordes of the Miguel Díaz-Canel dictatorship, who has said that protests are “unconstitutional.” The regime has cut the internet service and has put a gag on all the media, however, nothing has prevented the truth from coming to light: In Cuba the people ask for FREEDOM!
AMLO and Petro lead the new left
As he did at the last Summit of the Americas in June of this year, President AMLO is again on the wrong side of history and promotes actions to legitimize the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro. This same left-handed team is now joined by the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who does not seem to be very interested in human rights but rather in integration without integrity. The Colombian leader has shamelessly invited the dictatorships of Venezuela and Nicaragua to return to the Inter-American System. This means that they return home, to build an OAS very similar and even worse than the one that Hugo Chávez had dreamed of and established.
They go for the OAS
The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), founded in February 2010, was a ship that never set sail. It does not have a headquarters, a budget, firm leadership, much less a clear and achievable plan of action. Faced with this failed attempt at organization, the strategy of the radical left is to take advantage of the OAS vehicle to promote a new hemispheric agenda, tailored to its sinister aspirations.
A hemisphere in crisis
The 52nd General Assembly of the OAS could remain a mere diplomatic event with official protocol, a gala dinner and a family photo. I insist, pressing, urgent issues such as the militarization of security in Mexico, corruption in Peru and Guatemala, the announced illegal re-election of Nayib Bukele in El Salvador or the politicization of justice in Bolivia will not be reviewed.
Amidst this bleak and bleak picture, there is a ray of hope. The overwhelming majority of the OAS member states agree that the situation in Nicaragua is too rampant and atrocious to be ignored in this hemispheric forum. This small but relevant gesture makes me believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that perhaps not all is lost at the 52nd OAS General Assembly. We will see.
