Amnesty International said that it has evidence confirming the Myanmar police’s use of live ammunition against the demonstrators, indicating that this evidence contradicts the army’s claim that security forces were not carrying deadly weapons.
The organization said that evidence experts of the organization verified a video clip shared on social media showing a young woman was shot in the head, fired by Myanmar security forces during protests in the capital Nay Pyi Taw on February 9.
According to media reports, the woman lost significant brain function and had little chance of survival.
The Myanmar military’s “Real News Information Unit” said in a statement that the security forces had not used lethal weapons. However, a policeman is shown using a BA-94 or BA-93 Uzi machine gun.
“The serious injuries suffered by 19-year-old Mia Thuy Thuy Kheng, 19-year-old girl, were caused by Myanmar police firing live ammunition directly at peaceful protesters,” said Sam Doberley, Head of the Crisis Evidence Lab at Amnesty International.
He stressed, “The need for the unnecessary and excessive use of force by the Myanmar security forces to stop immediately. It is also necessary to respect the right of people to peacefully express their rights.”
