The Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature announced the names of the winners in its tenth session, amounting to 100,000 Omani Riyals (about 260,000 dollars), and it was won by the Algerian Wassini Al-Araj in the field of novels.
The award in the field of media and communication studies went to Omani Abdullah bin Khamis Al Kindi, while the award was withheld in the field of film directing.
Wasini Al-Araj commented on his win in a quick post on his Facebook account, saying, “I apologize to everyone who congratulated me on winning the Sultan Qaboos Award for not interacting with them at the same moment, as I did not learn of the win until I was at the airport.”
He added, “Thank you from the heart to everyone across the Arab world, and thanks to the Glorious Prize for its great confidence in my novelistic effort.”
Wassini Al-Araj (69 years old) is a chair professor at the Central University of Algiers and the Sorbonne University in Paris. He writes in Arabic and French and has many novels, including “The Jasmine Ring,” “The Female Mirage,” “Casanova’s Women,” “The Andalusian House,” and “The Andalusian House.” “Mirrors of the Blind” in addition to other writings.
Habib bin Mohammed Al Riyami, head of the Sultan Qaboos Higher Center for Culture and Science, said in a press conference – today, Wednesday – that the total number of applicants who met the requirements for candidacy in this session reached 171 people, with 30 candidates in the field of media and communication studies, and 25 candidates in the field of film directing. In the field of novels, 116 candidates.
The award was established in 2011 and is presented alternately every year to Arab innovators and every year to local innovators in the Sultanate of Oman.
