Navigation traffic was disrupted at Hamburg Airport in Germany yesterday evening, Saturday, after an armed man entered the airport yard in his car accompanied by a child.
Hamburg police believe that a child custody dispute may have been the reason behind the man violently storming the airport courtyard.
The police said – via the X platform – that a large security operation is currently taking place on the runway at Hamburg Airport, and that they are present at the site, with a large contingent of emergency services.
According to a German police spokesman, an armed man drove a car through a checkpoint, entered Hamburg Airport and fired his weapon twice in the air, adding that no one appeared to be injured, but the airport announced that take-offs and landings had stopped.
The police said that the incident occurred around 8 pm local time (9:00 GMT), explaining that the person threw two burning bottles from the car after opening fire.
According to reports, the man, believed to be 35 years old, according to police, was carrying a 4-year-old child in the car. Hamburg airport was completely evacuated.
Police assume there was a hostage-taking, as they believe the father “took the child” from the mother, perhaps forcibly, before driving his car towards Hamburg and onto the airport tarmac.
A special force was deployed at the scene, in addition to a police psychologist.
