She said: We cannot talk about sustainable development without addressing population increase, noting that the state has developed a plan to confront overpopulation based on solidarity and complementarity among all state institutions.
She indicated that fertility rates decreased during the nineties compared to the years following this period, pointing out that the state is studying a set of incentives to encourage facing the increase in population.
And she continued: “The poorest governorates, such as some governorates of Upper Egypt, witness the highest fertility rates,” noting that the average fertility rate in some governorates of Upper Egypt reaches 6 or 7 children.
Al-Saeed stressed that the state’s plans to confront the population increase will depend on incentive measures, not punitive, noting that the population increase eats away all the fruits of development.
She expressed her wish that the population of Egypt would reach 117 million only, not 130 million within 10 years, noting that 80% of families of up to 10 members belong to poor families.
