Saudi Arabia scored two goals near the end to come from behind and win 2-1 over Oman in its first match in the Asian Football Cup held in Qatar after the video assistant referee awarded the victory goal, despite the main referee initially indicating otherwise.
Saudi Arabia shared the top spot in Group F with Thailand, which beat Kyrgyzstan earlier today.
Ali Al-Bulaihi, Saudi Arabia’s defender, scored his country’s second goal with a header, but the assistant referee indicated there was offside.
After reviewing the video referee, the arena referee announced that the goal was not counted and play resumed before the referee retracted his decision and confirmed the validity of Al-Bulaihi’s goal.
Salah Al Yahyai gave Oman the lead in the 14th minute with a penalty kick, awarded after a review by the Video Assistant Referee, which he shot to the right of goalkeeper Ahmed Al Kassar.
Abdul Rahman Gharib equalized in the 78th minute for Saudi Arabia after a wonderful individual effort.
