Foreign diplomatic missions in Somalia have warned the country’s leaders against taking any unilateral steps regarding the upcoming elections.
In a joint statement, foreign diplomatic missions said that they welcomed the holding of a consultative meeting between Somali leaders on the 15th of this month, to reach an agreement on the outstanding issues around the elections.
She stressed that “the issue of the conference venue cannot constitute an excuse for any delay in this important meeting,” stressing “the need for heads of federal and state governments to work in a constructive spirit to resolve outstanding issues.”

She emphasized that “the leaders of Somalia must leave their next conference with a timetable for the upcoming elections, after the end of the constitutional period of the current authorities,” noting “the need to expand consultations by communicating and listening with other political components in order to reach a broader and comprehensive consensus.”
The diplomatic missions warned of unilateral steps that the Somali parties may take, saying, “The time has come to avoid unilateral measures taken by the parties alone, and to move quickly to agree on the process of implementing the September 17 elections to select the leaders of Somalia.”
