Israeli media reported that the chief rabbi of the Sephardic Jews, Yitzhak Youssef, is visiting the Emirates, where he will open a religious school today, Saturday, in the first visit of a senior rabbi to an Arab country.
The rabbi’s office confirmed that he went to the UAE on Thursday, in “a sign of strengthening relations between the UAE and Israel.”
During his visit, which will continue until Sunday, he is scheduled to meet senior Emirati officials and open a Jewish school and install Rabbi Levi Duchman as the chief rabbi of the UAE’s Jewish community.
Yitzhak Youssef will visit the Jewish Community Center and Beit Tefila Synagogue in Dubai, in addition to the kosher restaurant in Burj Khalifa.
“The visit of the Chief Rabbi is historic and it is a great honor for us to welcome him here in the UAE,” said Rabbi Duchman. He added, “We are very pleased with his arrival as we are currently inaugurating many of our new institutions that are being built quickly and efficiently.”
This comes after the UAE and Israel signed the so-called “Abraham Accords” on normalizing their relations and establishing cooperation in various fields.
