“Biden contacted the leaders of 10 different countries, including old US allies such as Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Germany,” Danon, the former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, wrote via Twitter. “Is it time to contact the leader of Israel, the closest ally of the United States?”
Danon added to his tweet a phone number that he said belonged to Netanyahu, but The Times of Israel said that number was old and was no longer in use.
Danon, whose term expired in July, is a member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, but he is not on the party’s list in the upcoming March elections, and his party decided, hours before the tweet, to remove him from his position as head of the Global Likud, after an internal dispute over the position.
The “Zaman Israel” website said that some in the “Likud” party believed that Danon issued the tweet to embarrass Netanyahu and to urge him to appoint him to a new position.
Danone’s tweet has already gained some attention from diplomats, reporters and other public figures. The tweet has been retweeted more than 1,000 times, including by CNN’s Jake Tapper, as well as by actor Seth Rogen.
Responding to Danone’s tweet, Gérard Arrow, France’s former envoy to the United States, Israel and the United Nations, wrote, “A French proverb: When your wife betrays you, don’t yell from the roofs.”
In turn, Ofir Averan, the former Consul General of Israel in the southeast of the United States, wrote to Danone: “You are a source of embarrassment for us in Israel. You have no idea what diplomacy means.”
Some view Biden’s lack of contact with Netanyahu since taking office as contempt, and has led to speculation about his approach to Israel.
