The Angola national football team hopes to regain the memories of reaching the quarter-finals in its participation in the 2008 and 2010 editions, when it competes in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals, which will be held next month.
The “Black Deer” team will appear – for the ninth time – in the continental championship hosted by Ivory Coast between January 13 and February 11.
Angola plays in Group D, alongside the teams of Algeria, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.

Establishment
The Angolan Football Federation was founded in 1979, and one year later it joined the International and African Football Confederations. The team played its first international match in February 1976, losing to the Congolese national team 2-3.
The “Black Deer” ranked 117th in the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) classification last November, while the best position it achieved in the classification was 45th in July 2000.
Angola is among the nations of Africa
Angola is participating for the ninth time in the continental championship, and succeeded in qualifying for the first time in 1996.
- 1996 edition in South Africa: It left in the first round, after losing to Egypt and South Africa and drawing with Cameroon.
- 1998 edition in Burkina Faso: AIt was eliminated from the first round by drawing with South Africa and Namibia and losing to Ivory Coast.
- 2006 edition in Egypt: It was eliminated from the group stage after a defeat to Cameroon, a draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and a victory over Togo.
- 2008 edition in Ghana: It reached the quarter-finals, lost to Egypt 1-2, and left the competition.
- 2010 version in Angola: It reached the quarter-finals and was defeated by Ghana 0-1.
- 2012 edition in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon: It was eliminated from the first round with a win over Burkina Faso, a loss to Ivory Coast, and a draw with Sudan.
- 2013 edition in South Africa: Eliminated in the first round, bA draw with Morocco and two losses to South Africa and Cape Verde.
- 2019 edition in Egypt: She called from the first round BTwo draws with Tunisia and Mauritania and a loss against Mali.

Team coach
Portuguese Pedro Suarez appointed Gonçalves to head the Angolan national team in 2019, and in September 2023 he succeeded in leading the team to qualify for the next African Nations Finals, after finishing the qualifying rounds second in Group Five with 9 points behind leaders Ghana (12 points).
Before supervising the first team, Gonçalves (47 years old) coached the Ghana U-17 and U-20 teams, the Angola Primero de Augusto team, and the Portuguese youth clubs Lisbon and Amoura.
