Ankara has warned Washington of the consequences of continuing pressure on it to purchase the Russian “S-400” missile system for air defense, and warned that this US position might push Turkey to other directions.
The spokesman for the Turkish presidency, Ibrahim Kalin, said: “If another country (the United States) comes to us with an extremist position and announces that we are either dealing with our conditions or nothing else, then such a position pushes us in other directions.”
According to two arguments, Turkey can acquire the “S-400” systems without violating the defense system of NATO, and that the solution to this problem will be through constructive dialogue with Washington.
The Turkish presidency spokesman indicated that the United States should take into account the seriousness of Turkey’s position on the “S-400” system, and understand that the decision to obtain it was not taken “overnight.”
Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 air defense system has caused a crisis in its relations with the United States.
Washington demanded that Ankara abandon the deal and buy the American Patriot systems in return, threatening to delay, or even cancel, the sale of the latest F-35 fighters to Ankara, as well as impose sanctions on Ankara in accordance with the CAATSA law (Facing America’s Enemies).
