Dodgers utility player Tommy Edman suffered another setback in his injury-hampered season Sunday, leaving the game against the Rays after aggravating a persistent right ankle issue while running the bases.
The incident occurred in the fifth inning after Edman singled to center field. He pulled up abruptly while rounding first base and was removed from the game after a consultation with a team trainer, limping off the field under his own power.
This is the latest in a series of ailments for Edman. He previously missed 16 games on the injured list in May with inflammation in the same ankle and also sat out three games in early July with a fractured toe.
The recurring ankle problem has impacted both his role and his production. To reduce strain, Edman has played an infield position in 42 of his last 44 games, seeing significant time at second and third base. His performance at the plate has also suffered; since returning from his May injured-list stint, he is hitting just .214/.273/.323, dropping his season line to .228/.281/.396.
Miguel Rojas entered to pinch-run for Edman and remained in the game at second base.
