Phil Foden’s absence from Manchester City’s pre-season friendly against Palermo was due to an ankle injury, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.
The England international was a notable omission from the travelling squad, but Guardiola clarified that the decision was precautionary. Speaking ahead of the match, the City manager explained that Foden “had a problem with a knock on his ankle” and was left out to avoid further risk.
Looking ahead to the Premier League opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Guardiola expressed cautious optimism about Foden’s availability. He stated that while it “depends on the problem,” the team is hopeful for his return, noting, “It’s a long week.”
The injury comes as a minor setback for Foden, who is looking to play a pivotal role in City’s 25/26 campaign after a challenging previous season. The club will now monitor the midfielder’s recovery closely in the build-up to the match at Molineux.
