The preparatory committee for establishing the unified council for the eastern provinces in Yemen was announced in the city of Sayun in Hadramaut “to contribute to achieving the just aspirations and goals of its people,” days after a statement by more than 200 figures demanding equal representation in any political settlement.
The announcement statement – which was read by the head of the committee, Abdul Hadi Al-Tamimi – confirmed that the council is a political and societal project that aims to unify the efforts of the four governorates, “Hadramaut, Al-Mahra, Shabwa, and Socotra” into one entity to confront centers of influence seeking to control the capabilities of these governorates and rob them of their decision-making once again, according to the statement.
The statement also affirmed that the Unified Council of the Eastern Governorates “will be an effective political and societal project, a lever for the promising region, and a source of inspiration for the rest of the governorates and regions in the Republic of Yemen.”
Al-Tamimi pointed out that the emergence of a preparatory committee from the founding body is responsible for completing the regulations, statutes, procedures for forming leadership bodies, and drawing up general policies and goals.
He explained that the preparatory committee will be divided into 4 work teams: the technical team, the communication and relations team, the media team, and the resource development team.
He revealed that the 47-member preparatory committee will hold its meeting within two weeks, with its four teams continuing to work for a maximum period of 45 days, followed by the founding body holding its founding meeting to announce the presidency of the council, including the president, deputies, and the general secretariat, in accordance with the agenda and agenda of the preparatory committee.
The announcement of this step comes days after a statement issued by more than 230 political, tribal, academic, military, and feminist and youth leaders from the eastern governorates, through which they stressed the necessity of a balanced, fair, and equal presence of the people of the eastern governorates in any political settlement.
Observers also believe that the committee’s announcement is a painful blow to the Southern Transitional Council, which has failed to control these governorates over the past years.
